QVSR opens another new wing

Ayshford Sansome ended 2011 in good spirits with the official opening of the Wesley Wing at Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest.

The Seamen’s Mission of the Methodist Church was established in 1843 and it has been an honour to work alongside them to refurbish and update their premises since and during 2010, through 2011 and into 2012 on numerous projects.

The Wesley Wing now boasts another 9 en-suite rooms, including 1 disabled room on the first floor at the front of the building.

Reverend Leo Osborn, President of the Methodist Conference formally opened the Wing, which was followed by a carol service in the Emery Hall.

We wish all the staff and residents of QVSR a Happy New Year!

Going for gold

The Gold Challenge Olympic sports taster training sessions are now in full swing.  So far the staff at Ayshford Sansome have participated in basketball, waterpolo and badminton all in aid of J’s Hospice.

The badminton last month was particularly good fun, we learnt the art of not only getting the shuttlecock over the net, but also how to play in singles and doubles.

The next event will be ‘boxing’ which is planned for Tuesday 10th January 2012 at Baddow School, Chelmsford.

For further details please contact Phil or the J’s hospice directly at to register your interest and have a go at the up and coming boxing event.

MOT test centre completes

Work on the new ‘state of the art’ Class IV / VII MOT test centre is now complete on site at Mercedes Benz Croydon.  The facility has been designed to accommodate their largest Light Goods Vehicles, allowing the dealership to test and certify, on site, the full range of cars and vans sold by the dealership.

Architecturally, the challenge for the design team was to  ensure that the existing sales and workshop  building, originally conceived as an autonomous ‘Pavilion’ on the site, was not compromised by the new addition.  This was achieved by careful material selection and attention to the massing and scale of the addition.

Ayshford Sansome makes an impact in the annual review

Further to the Grand Opening of the Royal British Legion wing of the Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest (QVSR) in the East of London, our work has had a big effect in not only everyday life for the ex-seamen but also in the QVSR Annual Review brochure for 2010 – 2011.

We are delighted to see that four pages have been dedicated to this much welcomed refit, confirming the influence our work has had.

‘Very Good’ case study goes live

As part of the requirements towards achieving a Breeam ’Very Good’ rating for Prospects Learning Foundation’s new ‘Centre of Excellence for Construction and the Built Environment’ a dedicated section on the colleges website has been launched to case study the project.

The website will provide a source of information to the public containing detailed project information, project drawings and a monthly newsletter update as works progress on site in line with the Breeam guidance for section MAN9 of the assessment process.

Additional steps to inform end users about the project will involve regular site visits for the college’s pupils and staff.

Rob smashed the race in great time

Rob successfully completed the Great South Run on Sunday raising money for Children with Cancer UK in the process.

Sporting the charities trademark Mr Men running vest, he finished the 10 mile course in a time of 1hr 31mins 26secs coming 6,140th out of the record 24,000 entrants.

In favourable conditions the flat course remained dry and even the traditional Southsea winds were kind along the seafront for the final 2 miles.

Rob’s currently nursing his sore knees before planning his next challenge.

A further appointment from QVSR

We are pleased to announce that we have been appointed by QVSR (Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest) to carry out a feasibility study for refurbishment to another wing.

The area in question occupies three floors and currently accommodates 45 rooms and 4 shared bathrooms. It is anticipated that renovation to this wing could update the accommodation to provide in the region of 24-26 ensuite rooms, similar in standard and quality to those offered by earlier phase refurbishments.

It is hoped that work to this wing could commence in 2012.

Thumbs up for energy CPD

Thank you to Graham Childs and Nick Till from Banyards Consultants for delivering our October CPD evening on the use of energy in buildings.

Graham gave a comprehensive review of sustainable and renewable technologies currently available as well as some new technologies which are starting to become more main stream.

With attendees covering a diverse range of disciplines, the presentation concluded with an interesting discussion about the new initiatives for the management process ensuring targets and energy savings are met such as Energy Performance Contracts, an idea imported from Canada.

If you missed this very useful and informative evening then be sure to catch our final CPD event for 2011 covering Breeam assessment on November 30th, details to follow….
